How to deal with a frozen condense pipe

Dealing with a frozen condensate pipe is a common issue, especially during cold weather.

The condensate pipe is a crucial component of a condensing boiler system, and when it freezes, it can cause the boiler to stop working.

Here are steps you can take to deal with a frozen condensate pipe:

 1. **Locate the Frozen Section:** Identify the frozen section of the condensate pipe. This is often outside your home, leading from the boiler to a drain.

 2. **Thaw the Pipe with warm water:** Pouring hot water over the frozen section can help thaw the ice. You can use a watering can, hot water bottle, or direct a hair dryer at the frozen pipework.

 3. **Reset the Boiler:** Once you've thawed the condensate pipe, reset your boiler. Consult your boiler's manual for instructions on how to do this. In many cases, it involves pressing a reset button.

 4. **Insulate the Pipe:** To prevent the condensate pipe from freezing again, consider insulating it. This can be done using pipe insulation or by wrapping the pipe with insulation material. This helps retain heat and prevents freezing.

 5. **Reposition the Pipe:** If the frozen pipe is exposed to the elements, consider rerouting it or repositioning it to a more sheltered location. It may be the case that when your boiler was installed your condense pipe be undersized and needs upgrading.
